So the problem was that some the services were shut down, while this particular service was hanging. The server is seems to be up, since it's still deliverying web pages. Well it doesn't give you an error, but simply wait's for a couple of seconds, then appears to time out. Makes me feel like killing someone. I seem to authenticate properly, but the RDP logon dialog disappears after showing, "Configuring remote session..." for a few seconds.
